Ambulance Mechanic

Job Summary:

Responsible and accountable for providing quality mechanical repairs and maintenance work up to their level of certification, utilizing all resources available within the shop area. The Mechanic will provide ongoing preventive maintenance to include all emergency repairs and roadwork necessary. The primary objective of the Mechanic is to provide a qualified and safe shop environment for himself as well as other mechanics while being available to answer questions both to the field personnel and supervisors. Must provide basic hand tools.


Essential Functions:


Operational Objectives

  • Assist Team leads / Managers in the daily maintenance of the Fleet department.
  • Work closely with Team leads / Manager to ensure service levels are maintained.
  • Ensure inventory control management on work orders.
  • Perform required maintenance scheduled and unscheduled in a timely manner.
  • Inspect Company vehicles for possible failures or potential problems.
  • Issue parts to assigned work orders using the Company computer system.
  • Log potential problems as well as work performed and future work needed.
  • Test-drive each vehicle over the approved route, which includes a combination of city streets and highways for no less than five miles.
  • Accurately log daily craftsman hours on each work order.
  • Maintain cleanliness of work area.
  • Coordinate operations with regulatory agencies to meet all state and local requirements for vehicles and shop facility.
  • Conduct new product evaluations. 
  • Disclose any violations to driving record to Management as soon as they occur.


  • Comply with Company and OSHA safety standards in the work place.



Customer Service

  • Research and respond to customer service complaints.
  • Communicate with field personnel in response to their inquires.



  • Provide training and direction to Apprentice Mechanics, Journeyman Mechanics and or Fleet Helpers.
  • Attend all required Company training sessions.
  • Keep up with current motor vehicle technology.
  • Acquire, keep and maintain ASE and EVT certifications.


Systems and Automotive Repair Skills

  • Assist with the completion of appropriate forms and reports that are considered essential functions.
  • Read and interpret vehicle wiring diagrams and motor manuals.
  • Analyze problems related to a vehicles suspension and chassis and repair them.
  • Research and develop information independently.
  • Able to perform vehicle oil changes.
  • Diagnose and repair brake system.
  • Able to diagnose and repair diesel injection systems.
  • Diagnose and repair vehicle charging systems.
  • Diagnose and repair automotive AC systems.
  • Knowledge of tires and alignment repair and or replacement procedures.
  • Required to perform mobile field repairs when needed.
  • Remove and install motors.
  • Remove and install transmissions.



  • Complies and enforces all policies and procedures.
  • Has successfully completed all required Compliance Training within the required time period.
  • Has had no compliance related corrective action during the current review period.


Additional Duties:

  • Inventory and request needed supplies to perform department tasks.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned by team leads or management.
  • Read and comprehend the US English language.
  • Keep ones work area clean and well maintained.

  • Experience with electrical systems. 
  • Diesel experience highly preferred.
  • Current state driver’s license. 


Education Requirements: 

  • High School Diploma or general education diploma (GED) is required with two years experience as a mechanic and/or equivalent combination of education or experience.
  • Requires six or more ASE certifications.
  • Preference is given to EVT certifications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell.  The employee must regularly lift and/ or move up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Occasionally: Must have the ability to lift, carry and balance up to 80 pounds, pushing, pulling, climbing, carrying, sitting, flexibility.

Frequently:  Good manual dexterity, with the ability to perform all tasks related to the position of Fleet Mechanic. Hearing/listening, clear speech, smelling, lifting, reaching, kneeling, stooping, bending, and driving company vehicles. 

Constantly:  Ability to sit, walk and stand for extended periods of time, possess hand-eye-foot coordination and color recognition. 


Cognitive/Psychosocial Requirements:

Equipment Operated:

The individual in this position must be familiar with using the following equipment to perform the essential functions of this job. 

Occasionally: Fax machine, copy machine, hole-punch, calculator, laminator, Gurney, pager, wheelchair, telephone, calculator, copy machine, hydraulic lift, impact wrench.

Frequently:  Printer, telephone, cell phone, clock, company vehicle, 

Constantly:  Maintenance tool, hand, diagnostic equipment, brake lathes, alignment machines, tire mount and dismount machine, scanners, analyzers, electrical tools and computer.


Working Conditions:

The working environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The Fleet Mechanic occasionally works extended hours outside normal business hours. The Fleet Mechanic also occasionally works in extreme hot and cold, temperature changes, noise, and fumes/odors/mists. The Fleet Mechanic frequently works independently, and often engages in face-to-face and verbal contact with business clients. 


Driving approximately 10% of time. 


Environmental Conditions:

Except where appropriate and conducive to accomplishing the goals and objectives of a particular task (such as in an emergency situation) the Fleet Mechanic will work in a well lighted area that is ventilated and is as physically and psychologically innocuous as possible under the conditions which exist at a particular time.  Because the essential function of the job of Fleet Mechanic may require exposure to hazardous materials as well as infectious waste, diseases, odors and other situations associated with health care, including but not limited to exposure to AIDS, HIV and Hepatitis B viruses involving Risk Classification Category 3 environmental conditions will fluctuate.  To be qualified for the position of Fleet Mechanic, an applicant/employee will have the ability to work in an environment conducive to caring for patients, with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to self or others.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately high.
